Weekend Reading Getting from College to Career by Lindsey Pollak - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career As I say, the time when you should be paying the most attention to your personal brand is in college. During college you are given the most amount of choices and the highest degree of education before you enter the real world. Choices, such as what major and minor you want to enlist in, as well as what extra ciricullar activities you want to participate in, internships to apply for and an overarching career path. College is a time when brand discovery is essential and that initial investment will pay off in the long run. Students have very little support, aside from a few counselors, family members and friends. Classroom experiences cannot mimic what a day on the job is, but rather train your mind to think critically and strategically. There are no classes that are built for preparing students for what awaits them. They say that college prepares you for the rest of your life, but in my opinion, it doesnt unless you make it. You need to take college for all that it is and soak up as much knowledge as you can in 2-4 years, as well as create a network. This all leads me to Lindsey Pollak (soon be be married), who is a wonderful woman (that blogs), that sent me a copy of her book recently. I get a lot of books in the mail by authors, but have very little time to give them the review they deserve. I do enjoy books and will always find them valuable, even though eBooks and blogs are taking over (Im writing a book as well). Before I get into one of my rants, I would like to say that Lindseys new book Getting from College to Career is perfect for students, who are clueless about their careers and have listened to too much typical advice. Aside from her 2 other books, this one is clearly special. For one it is published by one of the most acclaimed publishers (Harper Collins). Also, there are worksheets, tips and resources in the book that are both helpful and informative. Here are some of her tips (out of 90 tips!!!!) Associate: It doesnt matter what your career is because their are associations to support you and introduce you to new people. Intern Early and Often: Internships build your resume, business sense, contacts, and industry knowledge. Minor: You have the opportunity to take courses outside of your major and its smart to learn about subjects that may position you for an easier job search. Relax: Your first job isnt the only one you will ever have, so dont marry it. Get Carded: Being a student is no excuse not to have a business card. Seek a Mentor: How can you turn a hero into a real career adviser? Cultivate a mentor. Follow Every Rainbow: Go to job fairs, search newspaper ads, classifieds, get a referall from your teacher, and use your network. Want more? Pickup her book today on Amazon.com. The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger follows a young professional (Andrea Sachs) as she navigates an office culture that encourages employee dishonesty and corruption. Identifying a Corrupt Workforce Often the corruption within an organization can be identified within the first week or so. In the case of The Devil Wears Prada, Andrea gets the first sign that her ethics will be tested when the woman training her explains the unofficial sick day policy adopted by many of the employees. “If you have to be out, and you never will, but just in case something really awful happens, you’ll just give me your card, and I’ll swipe it that way you’ll still get paid for all the days you miss even if you go over. You’ll do the same for me. Everyone does it.” Emily Charlton, The Devil Wears Prada The false wage claims were only one signal of an unethical workplace for Andrea. Throughout the story employees at Andrea’s work make-off with designer clothes, apparel, and make-up without the permission of management, something that Andrea herself eventually takes part in. Here are a few different clues that, like Andrea, your workplace culture might be rife with unethical behavior that will tempt you: Minor or major rules are broken by senior employees who should know better. Co-workers regularly lie about their work flow. Employees are secretive about their actions. Time spent at work, on break, or on tasks is improperly reported. How do you steer clear of the temptation to fall into unethical work habits? Oliver Sheldon, an assistant professor at Rutgers Business school, who specializes in organizational behavior and psychology, offers two factors that can help you be more ethical in Anticipating Temptation May Reduce Unethical Behavior, Research Finds. What does the paper suggest? Sheldon found that individuals “who anticipated a temptation to act unethically were less likely to then behave unethically, relative to those who did not.” In order to steer clear of unethical behavior, individuals should regularly identify what situations might tempt them to engage in unethical behavior. Simply identifying temptation might not be enough. Sheldon also found that the ability of individuals to act ethically might be dependent on the individual “identify[ing] an unethical act as having the potential to jeopardize their self-image, integrity, or reputation.” As a second step, you should identify every possible negative impact the unethical action can have on your professional and personal life. So why does workplace corruption matter from an individual standpoint? Why shouldn’t you cave to the corrupt company culture? As Sheldon suggested, let’s forget about integrity, moral fiber, and all sense of cultural acceptable decency for a minute. Here are a few less altruistic reasons not to cave to a corrupt company culture. You might not be able to afford to lose your job. Employee theft (of time and products) lead to “33% of business bankruptcies.” The business might choose now to begin monitoring employees more aggressively. Not engaging in the practice covers your own back. Stealing from your company could lead to a lawsuit and prison. Stealing from your employer might become a habit you can’t shake when you pursue another job. Ethics can be difficult to maintain in a company culture that allows employee corruption to flourish. In order to prevent yourself from walking down that that devilishly tricky path, you should identify what types of temptation you will face and how that temptation will affect your life personally. How can you hack your brain to build a better habit loop at work?Habits Start in the Basal GangliaevalBuilding habits isn’t just about repeating the same action over and over again until it becomes second nature. What you’re doing when you’re building a habit is reprogramming your brain. When you carry out a new action for the first time, the thinking part of your brain â€" also known as the cerebral cortex â€" activates. Your brain has to figure out the best way to do something new, and that requires active thought.evalAs it becomes a habit, your cerebral cortex starts to take a backseat to another part of the brain, known asthe basal ganglia.Scientists have observed this behavior in mice when they’ve been introduced to a new maze. In the beginning, their cerebral cortexes are active while they figure out the maze. As they continue to explore the same maze, however, the cerebral cortex takes a backseat and the basal ganglia go into overdrive.What you’re doing when you’re making habits is actively reprogramming your brain to use your basal ganglia instead of your cerebral cortex. The only downside of this is that once a habit â€" good or bad â€" makes its way into your basal ganglia, it’s there for good.You can create more powerful good habits to override the bad ones â€" like exercising whenever you get the urge to light up a cigarette â€" but those bad habits will always be there, looking for the cues to trigger them. That’s where habit loops come in.What Is the Habit Loop?Following a habit loop helps you build new habits, but what does the phrase mean?A habit loop refers to the phases that help you to reprogram your brain and turn a task into something that you can do on autopilot. It’sb roken into four parts: the cue, the craving, the response, and the reward.The cue can be anything from the time of day to your emotional state. Bad habits tend to be triggered by a person’s emotional state â€" reaching for a cigarette after a stressful day at work, or eating poorly when they’re depressed.evalThe next phase is the craving. What does that cue make you want to do?Phase three is the response. Do you give in to the craving and strengthen a bad habit, or carry out a task to build a good one? This leads into the reward. When you check your phone at your desk, for example, the reward may be the break from the monotony of your workday.This sounds fairly complicated, but it’s something that we do unconsciously. Until you recognize the loop for what it is, you can’t build one that will serve you.Building a Habit Loop at WorkWhat tasks do you do every day that could be handled by your basal ganglia? You might not be able to respond to emails on autopilot, but setting up your workstation, receiving your assignments for the day and other mundane tasks can be delegated away from your cerebral cortex.evalStart with a simple habit, like organizing your workspace every morning. This doesn’t just get you in the right mindset for work, it can actually help keep your stress levels down. Chronic stress caused by disorganization can negatively affectyour physical, mental and emotional healthand make it harder to buckle down and get to the task at hand.Break down that habit into the four phases. First the cue, which would be the beginning of your work shift. Your craving is for a clean workspace, so you take a few minutes to organize everything. Your reward is also a clean workspace, and the serotonin that your brain releases as a reward for a job well done.If you do this every morning for a few weeks, you’ll find that you don’t have to think about it anymore. That means that you’re on autopilot and your basal ganglia have taken over. Congratulations â€" you’ve just created your first habit loop.Now you can take what you’ve learned and apply it to other aspects of your workday and your life.Hacking Your Habit LoopOf course, we experience this habit loop for bad habits as well as good ones. That’s where hacking the habit loop comes in â€" and don’t worry, you don’t need any programming experience for this sort of hack.The trick goes back to the four phases of the loop â€" cue, craving, response, reward. To hack your loop, you needto change the response. Everything else, from the cue to the craving and the reward, stays the same. Start small, even ridiculously small.If you want to start flossing every day, start by flossing one tooth. If you want to stop eating junk food when you’re bored, change your response when you feel that hunger cue â€" nibble on grapes or other sweet fruit when you’re craving a chocolate bar.Hacking your habits will take as long, or even longer, than building new ones because those cues and r esponses have become so ingrained in your psyche.evalHow Long Does It Take to Replace Negative Habits With Positive Ones?Now you know how to replace an old, negative habit with a positive one using the loop. And you can rest assured knowing that eventually, the neural pathways we no longer use tend to atrophy â€" meaning as time passes, automatically reaching for our healthy habit becomes routine, and negative patterns diminish.evalBut if they don’t disappear, how long will it take for things to get easier? Will willpower always play a role? How long does it take to transform the cerebral cortex?Conventional wisdom taught us it took anywhere from 21 to 28 days to replace an old habit with a new one. However, recent research indicates it may take much longer.A recent study published in The European Journal of Social Psychologyindicates it takes 66 dayson average to form a new habit. However, in the 96 individuals polled, the time varied from 18 to 235 days until the new routine stu ck.In short, how long it takes for your new habit loop to feel more natural may take less time than thought, or it could take much more. Your habit loop is as unique as your fingerprint â€" so, instead of despairing, celebrate your efforts toward progress. After all, whether you begin building a new habit loop today or next week, the sooner you embark, the sooner you finish.Don’t Give UpThe best advice we can offer is this: don’t give up. Creating new habit loops and hacking old ones is hard to do even on the best of days. Conscious awareness and your job hunt -

Conscious awareness and your job hunt - If you are looking for a job, do you feel stuck and like you dont know what to do next? You are not alone, as most job seekers I know dont intend to become professional job hunters and dont feel confident that they can move from step to step, knowing exactly what they are doing. Last month, I attended a workshop with Havi Brooks. She specializes in what she calls Destuckification: working through the stucknesses that get in the way of doing your thing. Havi teaches about how to get unstuck via a mind-body/yoga practice called Shiva Nata. She calls it brain training that looks like martial arts and acts like drugs-that-make-you-smart-and-hot. Even Havi calls is wacky, and it is nothing if not a bit unconventional teaching your brain to act differently by focusing on patterns, deconstructing them and building new ones!   (Im no expert on the subject, having just starting studying it, but I think that gets at the basics for our purposes! Read Havis blog and explore her site for more details.) So, what does this all have to do with you the job seeker who is stuck and cant figure out the next step? One of the big things we discussed at the workshop was how important it is to bring conscious awareness to patterns in order to challenge and change them. Really, thats just a fancy way of saying that you need to notice whats happening and point it out to yourself to impact a change. So, instead of wallowing in self-doubt and avoiding your job search like the plague, stop and think, Hmmmhow am I feeling when I think of my job hunt? Does it give you a stomach ache? Your head hurts? You panic? You know its important and urgent, but instead of working on it, you decide to take a bike ride instead? Or, eat a plate of cookies? Every time you think of your job hunt and you go numb and panic, try to be aware of the pattern. Look at   your intellectual response I should do this now. I feel guilty if I dont work on my search. Examine the physical response I cant breathe. I get a pain in my neck. Stress creeps into my shoulders. Focus on what you do I clean the house instead. Or eat chocolate. Or watch TV. Then, think about little steps you could do differently. If, when you think of sitting down to your search and start getting stressed, you took a moment to be really aware of all that is going into those feelings, you may have a much better chance of jumping over the hurdle and making a change step-by-step. Maybe instead of cleaning the whole house, or eating the whole box of cookies, you decide that youll JUST clean one bathroom or eat two cookies and then do 30 minutes of job searching. Im no expert in teaching about conscious awareness, and I want to make it clear that is my interpretation of when of the things I learned from Havi, but I thought it was too important of a concept NOT to share the idea.
